About Us

The South Bergen Workers' Compensation Pool (SOBER) was the first public entity Self-Insured Pool organized in the State of New Jersey beginning operations on July 1, 1983. Though The Pool has the right to expand its operations to other types of self–insured programs, it continues to operate as a workers’ compensation self-insurance Pool only and as a sponsor of insured safety Group Programs for other property and casualty forms of insurance. Since its founding, SOBER has maintained a stable, dedicated membership, and initial discount of 30% of Net Workers’ Compensation Premium after Premium Discount, and a substantial surplus designed to act as a stabilizer in costs and a protection against unexpected losses.

SOBER believes that its program has been highly cost-effective while providing improved medical care to its member’s employees and reducing the amount of lost time resulting from occupational injuries.
